My name is Norah a wife and mother of 4. I had my firstborn when I was 19 years old under very difficult conditions in Uganda. Having experienced the hardships and near-death mothers and their babies go through during labour, I was moved to make a difference to maternal health in rural areas.
In 2019, I visited Gwendiya Health Centre in Gulu, northern Uganda with a couple of friends for the first time and witnessed the heart wrenching reality women go through giving birth. Apart from the obvious poverty in the region, the only health centre in more than 5 villages lacked basic supplies and hygienic products needed for safe childbirth. The centre, made up of two small rooms only had one maternity bed. This bed was old and rusty exposing mother and baby to life threatening infections.
With the help of close friends and family, we managed to buy a brand-new maternity bed for Gwengdiva health centre and sanitary supplies. I realised this was a small act in one village that needed to extend to regions with a similar plight. Mothers are everywhere!
Mayn Aid was birthed with a vision to help pregnant mothers and babies in communities with no access to health centres where they can go and deliver their babies safely through the provision of necessary Health Care Services and Supplies.
Meet Romy Shamash a devoted mother of three wonderful daughters and a proud patron of Mayn-Aid, a heartfelt charity dedicated to supporting mothers and newborn babies in need. With a nurturing spirit and a deep sense of compassion, she has embraced her role as a patron, lending her voice and support to this noble cause.
Having experienced the joys and challenges of motherhood firsthand, Romy understands the importance of having access to essential support and resources during the critical phase of early motherhood. Her own journey has inspired her to reach out and make a difference in the lives of other mothers and newborns who may be facing difficult circumstances.
As a patron of Mayn-Aid, Romy plays a vital role in raising awareness about the organization’s mission and mobilizing support within her community. Through her advocacy and fundraising efforts, she helps ensure that Mayn-Aid can continue to provide vital services such as prenatal care, maternal education, and newborn essentials to those who need it most.
With her unwavering dedication and boundless empathy, Romy is a beacon of hope and support for mothers and newborns in need. Her commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of others reflects her belief in the power of community, kindness, and solidarity.
In Romy, Mayn-Aid has found a passionate advocate and ally—a true champion for mothers and newborns everywhere. Through her generosity and compassion, she is helping to create a brighter, healthier future for families in need.
I met Mrs Natasha Tahor through my work as well. She is a mother of two lovely girls, and as we talked, I shared with her what I do. She was deeply touched and moved with compassion. She immediately offered to buy a new maternity bed for the charity. The bed was purchased the next day and delivered to the lady featured in the pictures, who happens to be the midwife in the community.
As a charity, we would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Natasha and her husband for their kindness and generosity towards our cause, and we look forward to working with them in the future.
